University of Applied Languages

University of Applied Languages LogoHochschule fr Angewandte Sprachen (University of Applied Languages (HofAS)) was founded in Munich in 2007 as a private, non-profit institution within the more than 50-year-old SDI, Languages and Communication (Sprachen- und Dolmetscherinstitut, Munich).

The University of Applied Languages at the SDI opened its doors at the beginning of the winter term 2007/2008 and counts today around 230 students.

The university complements the classic language training programmes currently offered by the SDI in Munich, which for over 50 years has been among the most renowned educational institutions for training translators and interpreters in Europe.

The new Bachelor and Master of Arts focus on multilingualism and economics or technical communication. The students can enrol in programmes like International Business Communications, Multilingual and technical writing or Technical communication management. The Institutes standard languages are German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian and Chinese.

The contacts the SDI has worldwide make it possible for students to gather valuable international experience while they are studying and also to become aware of the opportunities that are available to them in a global market. The status of being a non-profit private university guarantees intensive contact between students and teaching and research staff.

The Universitys staff has deep experiences in computer-aided terminography, terminology science and computer-assisted translation. Most of the staff are linked to the professional world. They transfer their knowledge into their teaching and their research. It is this tradition and experience that benefit the new university also in the field of European Research where the SDI was involved (e.g. Lexalp).
