At the Institute of Linguistics at the University of Bern, research focuses on Swiss language policy and Swiss multilingualism, also in relation to Europe.
Research activities have included the analysis of linguistic data of the censuses 1990 and 2000, the status and development of bilingual Swiss cantons (Valais and Berne) and cities (esp. Biel-Bienne), language minorities in the Alps, evaluation of bilingual schools (French-German, German-Italian, German-Romansh), second language learning in primary schools, dialect accommodation in internal migrants in Switzerland, sociolinguistics of Switzerland and its four language areas.
Participation in international research projects in the last 10 years includes Foreign language learning in the obligatory school system (NRP 33), Bil.Bienne-bilinguisme à Bienne, Kommunikation in Biel (Foundation Gebert Rüf), Analysis of linguistic data of the Censuses 1990 and 2000 (Swiss Federal Statistics Office).
There have been several other projects funded by cantonal and communal educational offices.
Currently, the University of Bern is coordinating two FP6 projects (PROMET and LINEE), and 4 Marie Curie actions.
